Classes

Our classes are designed with you and your dogs comfort in mind. Our approach to training is relaxed with the aim that your dogs will enjoy the sessions. Dogs are NOT forced to comply in any of our training classes.

We are a KENNEL CLUB LISTED organisation offering the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme. It is the largest dog training scheme in the UK. Its aim is to promote responsible dog ownership and in turn, enhance our relationship with our pets and to make the community aware of the benefits associated with dog ownership. For more information on the scheme and exercises taught visit:  http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/activities/good_citizen.html

Little Learners - for puppies who are fully vaccinated and are aged under 24 weeks at the start of the course. This course is designed exclusively for puppies. There's lots to learn and plenty of useful advice about Toilet Training, Chewing, Mouthing and Biting. The exercises taught throughout the course will encourage you to build a rewarding relationship with your puppy. The course is run in line with the Kennel Club Good Citizen Puppy Foundation Assessment.

Bronze Level - We work towards achieving the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze Level Award. This course is for dogs that require basic training. The course is designed to ensure you are able to handle and control your dog in a variety of everyday 'real life' situations. We focus on how to build a rewarding bond with your pet, grooming, basic healthchecking, walking on a loose lead, and coming back when called. An ideal course for Rescues and Rehomed Adult Dogs. As they will be required to meet other adult dogs during the course, they must be comfortable and relaxed about doing this. On completion of the course, Have a Good Dog will assess suitability for those wanting to participate in the award assessment.

Silver Level - this progressive course works towards the Kennel Club Good Citizen Silver Level Award and is for all dogs (and handlers!) who have successfully achieved the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze Award. At this level you the course includes working closely with your dog around a variety of distractions including other adult dogs. The training exercises at this level are developed to include distance, duration and
outdoor work such as crossing roads & car travel. Sociability is a requirement for this course too, and dogs must be comfortable and happy to be healthchecked by other people, as well as exhibiting good manners around food and toys. On completion of the course, Have a Good Dog will assess suitability for those wanting to participate in the award assessment.

Higher Hounds (Gold Level) -This is an advanced course and you and your dog will do many of the indoor exercises OFF lead, including walking past other dogs and people. The course teaches emergency stop and calling your dog away from many distractions. It also includes sending your dog away from you to bed and relaxed isolation. Outdoor work (on lead) will include working in busy streets with other dogs and people passing by. Your dog must be well socialised and happy to be handled by other people and work around other dogs off lead to participate. You and your dog must have successfully achieved the Kennel Club Good Citizen Silver Level Award to qualify for a place on Higher Hounds.

NB This course involves 12 separate sessions and costs £120. Outdoor work away from the training hall environment is expected, and owners & dogs will benefit from the additional outdoor 'social walks' that will be organised by the trainer (included in the price). Please speak to the trainer for further information regarding course structure and payment.

Please note - Your dogs well being is our priority. If your dog is aged over 7 months and you wish to enrol them onto a training class and you have not attended our classes before, you will be required to complete a pre-training questionnaire. Once we have received this you will be asked to attend a half hour appointment at our Gilesgate venue with your dog. Your dog will meet the trainers dogs in a training class environment. We will assess your dogs behaviour during the half hour appointment to ascertain whether they will be happy and relaxed in the class environment, and whether they are sociable around other dogs. The cost of this appointment is £10. If your dog is not happy or relaxed in this situation, then we will organise either one to one training or a behaviour consultation. The cost of classes, one to one training and behaviour consults is in addition to your half hour appointment.
